Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
