Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.

Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.

Police then located multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Police report initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely human blood.

"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.

A senior representative said the attack left him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
