Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That
Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored that year
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
