The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
