The UK and US have established a major trade agreement that will preserve zero levies on UK medicine shipments being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to raise expenditure on drugs through the public health system. This move secures that duties on these key exports will remain at zero for a duration of 36 months.

This deal is in response to previous statements to significantly raise tariffs on patented pharmaceutical products, with increases mentioned up to double the cost.

"This arrangement between the Britain reinforces the global environment for cutting-edge drugs and establishes long-overdue equity to American-British pharmaceutical trade," an announcement said.

Trade Importance

Pharmaceuticals are one of the UK's most significant exports to the America, which is easily the biggest buyer for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics show that in the one-year period leading up to last September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount represented 17.4% of British export trade in that timeframe.

"This guarantee secures employment, stimulates capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a global hub for life sciences," a government official stated.

Specific British Pledges

The pact involves several specific changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it considers new therapies to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to double total public funding on drugs from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount manufacturers must return to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. Last year, repayments were more than twenty percent.

Broader Context

The deal comes amid a ongoing tension between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

These tensions were exacerbated by arguments that US patients were paying a premium for the same drugs than people in the other developed nations.

Recently, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while substantial investments have been pledged toward American operations.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must spend more on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a share of its total funding over the past decade.
