Trial and Implementation

This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a full-scale launch. This development coincides with a rise in content created by AI, driven by recent content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site exclusively feature content made by AI. A large amount of this content is deemed mass-produced AI material, a term for inferior, factory-style content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that many people like content produced via AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

TikTok disclosed that there are now over a billion videos on its service identified as made with AI. In total, in excess of 100 m videos are added to the platform daily, making clips made by AI a minor percentage of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to limit or boost the volume of AI-generated videos they view by accessing the “manage topic” setting in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that are already be controlled under the setting cover current affairs, style, aesthetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its policies oblige content makers to identify “realistic” artificially created content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any believable AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be deleted under its terms of service.

In addition, the service will from now on add an AI-generated watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing artificial media. This measure is intended to deter users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is additionally establishing a two million dollar educational fund for specialists and groups to produce educational content about ethical AI use. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on training computer science.

Platform Protection

TikTok has defended its moderation strategy, following discussion over plans to lay off hundreds of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its content moderation team in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead clarified that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but AI can shield workers by removing the most harmful content before it has to be seen by humans. The company reported a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
