Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
